Our memory is our coherence

“You have to begin to lose your memory, if only in bits and pieces, to realize that memory is what makes our lives. Life without memory is no life at all, just as an intelligence without the possibility of expression is not really an intelligence. Our memory is our coherence, our reason, our feeling, even our action. Without it, we are nothing.”

The legendary surrealist Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel on the existential importance of memory. Thanks Katerina!

  1. I disagree strongly. When you sky dive, get orgasm, bungee jump or do something that does not require your memory, only action, you live more than ever and don’t access your memory at all. My best experiences in life come up when I can get rid of that part of myself that is tied to my memories.
